  Born in Sisikon, canton Uri in Switzerland, he emigrated with his parents to Paris around 1870, but was sent back to Switzerland by the age of 6 or 7 to live with his aunt in Altdorf, also in Uri. He was called Marius and was raised by the aunt from the Arnold family, who led a famous bakery and cafe. Its unclear why Marius moved to the region of Luzern, but there he met his wife, who was one of the daughters of the Bründler family, well known for owning the restaurant "Tell" in Gisikon, canton of Luzern. The young couple dwelled In Rotherberg (Gemeinde Roth, Luzern) where Katharina was born, as well as 3 sisters and one brother. There is a painting still today (2020) of the parents Marius, painted before they left for Paris
